Synopsis: After losing his parents in a tragic accident involving a rhino in England, James Trotter is sent to live with his aunts, Spiker and Sponge, who treat him horribly. A mysterious old man gives him a bag containing the strongest magic in the world. When James accidentally spills it near an old peach tree, marvelous events happen which take James on an incredible journey across the ocean to New York in a Giant Peach accompanied by his new friends Centipede, Earthworm, Grasshopper, Ladybird and Spider.

Adapted from Roald Dahl's classic story by playwright David Wood. The tale works perfectly on stage, keeping youngsters glued and entertained throughout. Special effects are also planned to delight and amaze everyone!

NOTE: This play is NOT a musical.

Role Descriptions:

NOTE: All roles are open for actors ages 6-20 depending on specific age requirements.

No experience is necessary. We're always looking for new folks to join the Patio Family. And, of course, we welcome youth that have been onstage before.

James Trotter (Lead role) - Our very lonely young hero has had a rough childhood but becomes very brave and acts as the narrator much of the time. Must be able to play age 8-10. This role will be double cast.

Aunt Spiker - A comic mean, old spinster auntie of James. 40-60 years old. May be double cast.

Aunt Sponge - Another comic mean, old spinster auntie of James. These two are a bizarre pair. 40-60 years old. May be double cast.

Old Green Grasshopper (Major Support) - Elderly, genial, courteous and musical, plays the violin (can be faked), helps to narrate the story. Age 14-18.

Miss Spider (Major Support) - Sometimes sharp, sometimes sinister, but down deep she is kind. Age 14-18.

Centipede (Major Support) - A sparky, warm-hearted lad of a bug. Age 12-15.

Ladybird (Major Support) - Posh, though not prissy. Pretty, though not vain. Age 14-18.

Earthworm (Major Support) - Not only blind, but a pessimist and a doom merchant. Only James can boost his self-esteem. Age 14-18.

Tour Guide (Minor Support) - A cheerful, enthusiastic New York Tour Guide. Age 16-18.

Mr. Trotter Trotter (Minor Support) - James' kind but always busy father. Also plays the Mysterious Old Man, elfin-like with magical powers. Any age over 12.

Mrs. Trotter (Minor Support) - James' sweet mother who loves to shop. May be played by a male or female. Also plays the the Captain of the Queen Mary.

First Ship Officer (Minor Support) - Military attitude. Male or female over 12.

Second Ship Officer (Minor Support) - Military attitude. Male or female over 12.

Three Puppeteers - To work shadow puppets, rod puppets and one or two string puppets. Puppeteers will be trained by the director, a former professional puppeteer. Puppets will be made by the production staff with opportunities for the puppeteers to assist in their simple construction. Puppeteers will sometimes be seen by the audience.

Puppeteer/Rhino - No taller than 5' preferred. Age 10-14.

Six Children - For scenes when a group of children is needed. Typically when James is narrating his story. They will also create the "water wave effect," wear "shark heads" and move around in a threatening manner when the "Shark Attack" occurs. Ages 7-11. Prefer maximum height 50" tall.

Audition Information and Instructions:
Young actors auditioning will be seen in groups of 6 and will be given scenes and characters to "improv" (not necessarily characters and scenes from this show). At the end of each improv segment, some actors will be asked to read small excerpts from the script. These will be available to preview on the website after July 15th. No appointments are necessary.

Rehearsals begin on August 19 and will typically take place Wednesday and Thursday evenings, Saturday mornings and early afternoons with some Tuesday evenings being added in mid-September. Smaller roles do not rehearse as much as the larger roles.

Patio Playhouse Youth Theater encourages all interested children to come and audition for a chance to participate in live theater...an experience like no other. We're proud of being able to enhance young people's education in this way and are happy to present this opportunity to the community for children and their parents to enjoy the magic of plays for young audiences.
