Audition Dates & Times: Sunday September 4 & Tuesday September 6, 7:00-9:30 pm
Sign up via the form below. Walk-ins welcome; however, you may have to wait and will be seen whenever time is available during set audition times.

Audition Details: Prepare a 1-minute song in the style of the show (American standards). Bring recorded accompaniment track on USB-compatible device, CD, smart phone, etc. No a cappella. Provide conflict dates (see below). If questions or special needs, contact evelynlamden@patioplayhouse.com. You may also submit a resume/headshot prior to audition dates.

Callbacks: Monday, Sept 12, 7:30-10:00 pm at Patio Playhouse

Callback details: Be prepared to dance. Wear loose clothing and/or dance clothing. Dance shoes (character shoes) and/or closed toe shoes. Tap shoes if you have. Read from script, sing from libretto.

Volunteer musicians also needed! Reeds (flute, tenor/alto sax, clarinet), trumpet, trombone, keyboard, guitar, drums, bass. Please send email to evelynlamden@patioplayhouse.com.

Rehearsals: Generally Mon-Thurs starting Sept 12. Some other times may be called as needed. Not everyone required every night and detailed rehearsal schedule will be posted once show is cast, working around conflicting dates. No conflicts are allowed full week of November 13 (tech week) or show dates!

Performances: Nov 18-20 and Dec 2-18, 2016  Fri & Sat, 7:00pm; Sun 2:00pm (No shows Thanksgiving weekend)

Synopsis:A different time is evoked in this marvelously theatrical and winning show, a live broadcast of a The Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade from the Hotel Astor's Algonquin Room on December 21, 1942. The spirit of that bygone era when the world was at war and pop music meant "Strike Up the Band" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" (both are in this show) is accurately captured as the harassed producer copes with a drunk lead singer, the delivery boy who wants a chance in front of the mike, the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad, and the trumpet playing sound effects man who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller. Songs include: Love is Here to Stay, That Old Black Magic, You Go To My Head, I’ll Be Seeing You… and more!

Role Descriptions (ages and ranges are flexible depending on what you can bring to part! Some parts may be combined)

CONNIE MILLER: (RANGE: A4-D5) Looks 17, teeny bopper, bobby soxer. Taps and jitterbugs. Has a little Judy Garland in her. Drinks 12 Cokes.

GINGER BROOKS: (RANGE: tbd) 20–30s, bubble-headed waitress-turned-star, caricatured with Betty Boop, Betty Grable, pinup look.

JOHNNY CANTONE: (RANGE: tbd) 30–40s, featured vocalist (ala Sinatra) with voice of velvet. Class, wears diamond pinky ring. Drinks during show, gets sloshed. Dating Ann.

B.J. GIBSON: (RANGE: Bb3-D4) Young 20s, tall, preppy type. Taps and jitterbugs; aggressive about his career; good looking, squeaky-clean, Dick Powell look.

NEAL TILDEN: (RANGE: C#3-D4) 20–40, comic who drives a cab, wants to do it all: sing, dance, comedy, act; a real whiner.

ANN COLLIER: (RANGE: F3-Bb5) 30–40s, old standard in Cavalcade, must sound like big band vocalist (Peggy Lee, Gnny Simms, Dinah Shore, Doris Day….) Gorgeous. Must be able to move/dancer even better. Secretary by day, happy singing at radio station.

GENEVA LEE BROWNE: (RANGE: G3-D5) 20–50, beautiful, high-class, ethnic (African-American) singer who had own group, the Chocolate Drops. Can scat like Ella Fitzgerald, be sassy and bluesy. Dressed to kill.

BIFF BAKER: (RANGE: C3-D4, saxophone or trumpet player) Sings and plays in the band. Played with Glenn Miller but now heading overseas in a fighter squadron. Baby-faced, wears uniform.

POPS BAILEY: Looks over 60, is the stage doorman. Crotchety, miserable, crusty guy who makes book on the company phone and reads hidden copies of “Show Girl.”

STANLEY: No singing required. 20s. Lives in control booth, drinks coffee and eats constantly. Not too bright.

ZOOT DOUBLEMAN: No singing required. Non-gender role. 50s, Bandleader, plays piano; at home with musicians and shares jokes. Tired.

WALLY FERGUSON: No singing required. 20s. Poodle-eyed young hopeful from Pennsylvania. Practices everyone else’s routines; delivery boy making deliveries throughout show.

LOU COHN: No singing required. 30–40s, Stage manager, wears a hat because he’s sensitive about his hairline. Content with job, has plenty of authority and no responsibility. Cues the audience, band, performers, handles sound effects, runs the “show”.

CLIFTON A. FEDDINGTON: No singing required. 40+, announcer, general manager, head-of-everything at WOV. We see him in various states of hysteria, always has problems, cheapskate.
