Working or playing? My involvement with this show has really blurred the line between the two of them. In “real” life I am a general contractor with a small construction company, Noteworthy Construction. We specialize in custom homes and remodeling. I really came up through the ranks, starting as a laborer, then carpenter until I got my own contractor’s license. Now, I’m mostly on the phone or on the road (or both) traveling from job to job, making sure that other people are working. I consider myself a problem solver and that is the aspect of the job that I enjoy the most. A lot of that carries over into being a director, since most of that involves solving problems in one way or another. In that way, I probably identify most with Rex Winship (CEO), in that I enjoy being in charge. About that “blurry line” I mentioned earlier, from recreating the theater space at Patio Playhouse, to designing and building the set (with considerable help from cast and crew), to directing and taking a role in the show, I figure I must be nuts. Is this work or play? I guess the answer is both. All things seem to be tied into each other, at least at this stage in my life. I can tell you one thing, I am never bored. I have been married for over 30 years. My wife, Kathleen and I have five wonderful children ranging in age from 30 to 12. Raising them has really been my most rewarding job, and probably the thing that I am proudest of. The song Fathers and Sons (yes, we deliberately tried to make it a real tear-jerker in the show) really voices some of the thoughts and emotions that all parents experience. One of the most rewarding things about this production has been the devotion
and commitment of all the people involved. To everyone who work/played
too long, too late, too cheaply and too much, Thank You! |
