I play the Hispanic bag boy at the grocery store who originally was a farmworker. He is concerned with others understanding the origin of his people's culture and having appreciation for what they do. I identify with this character in that as I have grown older I have learned not to judge others and look to understand differences in others so that I have appreciation for what other people do. The Fathers and Sons song is the most moving for me because it hit home with my relationship with my father. Just like in the song, I remember him taking me to Angels baseball games. And sleeping in the car when he took me to movie drive-in. And taking me to Hawaii for many summers. When I was a kid I vividly remember swimming in one of the beaches of Hawaii and getting caught in a current that stopped me from moving anywhere. I started to drown and yelled for help. It's funny from my point of view as a kid, but I saw my dad dive off a cliff (which was a decent size but looked huge to me) and swim swiftly towards me. He grabbed me out of the current with ease and brought me safely ashore. I was in awe of his performance (he used to be a scuba diver). Another time, my Dad surprised me by taking me and my friends out of school early one day to see "Return of the Jedi" at the Chinese theatre in Los Angeles. It was great. My Dad gave generously to me in many ways. The most giving thing my Dad gave me was his love and a memorable childhood. Thank you Dad. I love you. The Fathers and Sons song touches my heart the most. When I hear it and especially when I perform it, I realize how much I love my Dad and start to remember everything he has done for me. Then I start to think of how many events in life I miss without him now that I am older. This song helps me reflect on our relationship. The songs I sing are challenging for me because they are slow paced and soft. I usually choose songs where I need to move a lot to get into character and also have a fast exciting tempo. In these songs I just stand still or hardly move and it's dependent solely on my voice, not body movement. The feeling of these songs are conveyed more through facial expression. It has been a challenge for me to be comfortable at the pace of these songs and to be still without feeling the need to move. I have now come to a point where I appreciate these songs and enjoy performing them. What makes this show different from others I've been cast in is that the performances are a little closer to reality as opposed to just telling a story. This show is important because it reminds us that all our choices affect who we are and where we are going. Our relationships, career, and identity are sometimes impacted greatly by what we choice to do day in and out. And it's important to see from this show that the power of attitude always makes a difference. One of the choices I've had to make is to not have as much time to have a real good conversation with Tammie. It's funny how even if you communicate well with someone on a regular basis, when more of your time is taken up where you cannot speak with that person as often or as long of a time even if it's for a short time period (like one whole night), you can be affected immediately. I thoroughly enjoy the work that goes into performing. I love this cast. Everyone is down to earth and at ease with each other. Richard as director is great with each one of us. It's more than a pleasure to work with this cast and I look forward to each night of working together in this show. One of the things I'm most proud of is eating the most carbohydrates that seem to be constantly supplied to the cast of this show. I feel good that I'm delivering my fellow cast members from temptation since there is no food left thanks to me. The conversations with the cast members. We have a doctor in the cast and I pick his brain about details for surgery (sadly it still does not affect my hunger). Also I enjoy talking with Richard the director about the show and teasing him for being in all our songs. |
