In my day job, I am a physician specializing in Emergency and Occupational Medicine. Since I'm by a nature a caregiver and enjoy helping people, I thoroughly enjoy my job. I play Lovin' Al the car hiker and Anthony the stone mason. I can really identify with Anthony because, like him, I take great pride in my work. I always want everything to be "perfect." It's pretty easy for me to play Anthony. Lovin' Al is another story. Now there's a challenge! I am a classically trained singer and Al, even though he has class, is not a classical singer. He is more of a jazz singer which is quite a bit different than what I am used to. It takes a lot of concentration on my part to sing the way Al does. I am also a Type A perfectionist personality (which is what you want in a doctor) so I am pretty hard on myself when I don't live up to my expectations of what I think Al should be. Another challenge about the show has been giving up my daily visits to the gym because of the demanding rehearsal schedule. I am only going to the gym once a week now. But since acting is my true passion in life, it's worth altering my schedule to do something I love. This show has a lot of moving songs, but the song that moves me the most is Un Mejor Dia Vendra, the migrant worker song, because it brings to mind the hardship and difficuties that some people in this world have to face just to survive. It's great to be back on stage and the best part is the chance to meet and work with some very talented and fun people. |
