In my day job, I am a postal worker. In the show I play 5 different characters, thankfully not all at the same time. Conrad Swibel, the UPS delivery man (What irony! Alanis Morissette be proud) and Ralph Werner, the 19-year old college student are the two main characters that I portray, the others being Dave the truck driver, a millworker and an office worker. Of all the characters in the show, the millworker is the one I associate most with my job, which involves sitting in front of a computer and entering codes to process the mail. Often times it is quite monotonous and doesn’t require a lot of thought, which epitomizes the motions of the millworker. As far as songs, there are three that move me the most - Un Mejor Dia Vendra, Just a Housewife and Fathers and Sons. In addition to the messages they convey, all three are beautifully written with simple and moving melodies and harmonies. But all of the music in the show are equally well written and move me in different ways, even to dance. Another song that affects me is Traffic Jam. The drive up to Escondido for rehearsals and performances can be a bear especially in the afternoon and this song typifies the commute. The greatest challenge (and accomplishment) I encountered in the show is the acting. Of the three disciplines in theatrical performance, acting is my weakest, due to the lack of training I have received. I consider myself a singer-dancer-actor. It is also challenging in the fact that these characters are real people and I hope to give them justice through my performance. I would like to thank Richard and Mary for giving me this opportunity to practice my acting chops and to Jonathan and Adriana for guidance, support and insight in shaping these characters. I’ve given up cleaning my house to be in this show. But for those of you who know me, that’s been going on for a long time so really, no big loss. Watching my favorite weekly TV shows is another “sacrifice” I have partaken. But hey, I’m doing what these actors are doing and I’m having a lot of fun doing so. Where else can you be as crazy, silly, stupid and funny as you can be (without being institutionalized) and still be accepted? It’s always great to work with people you’ve enjoyed working with before and I have previously worked with most of the cast from past shows. And those who I have just met, I feel like I have done shows with them for a long time. I am proud to be part of this cast of very talented people and hope to work with all of them again soon. |
