Hi! My name is Emily. I am the keyboard player with the Working band “Temporary Help” and in my “spare” time I’m an RN working in healthcare administration. I would say that the most amazing thing for me about doing this show is how much preparing for the show has actually paralleled my own working life. Starting out as the new kid on the block, just graduating from nursing school or just getting the musical score for the first time – completely unsure of my skills, untested with my “coworkers” and not sure about being accepted. After the first few weeks on the “job,” I realized how little I really knew…about starting an IV or giving medications or playing the right notes or the right tempo. Being my own worst critic with an incredible fear of failure, I studied hard, soaked in everything I could from my first nursing supervisor Janet,…or the musical director Mary, and was actually astounded at the first signs of success – finding that vein on the first try or getting through that tough musical number without completely losing it (yes, guys, the Waitress song is a killer)! Jumping forward to the present, a lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into both my chosen career in life…and in the preparation for this show. But now that we have all settled into our routine, and feel more confident about ourselves and the show we will be presenting to you, we can actually relax a little and enjoy this along with you! You may even hear the band cracking a joke or two, which has been known to happen at the quietest times….that Dan is a trouble maker! I dedicate my performance in this show to my Mother, who passed away last year. She worked her whole life as a housewife, raising me and my three sisters, helping me through unwanted chores, broken hearts, frustrating jobs and a myriad of trials and tribulations to make me the person – the worker – the musician – I am today. When I play Just a Housewife or Cleaning Women or Fathers and Sons I think of my Mother and the better life she created for me. I work during the day so that I can spend my off time enjoying my life long passion for music – and the cast and crew of Working have made the long hours of rehearsal, midnight bedtimes on “school nights,” and conflicting demands on my time very much worth it. |
