ABOUT THE PLAY

After writing several tragic masterpieces such as Hamlet and King Lear, based on stories available to him, Shakespeare chose for his last play an original story. On the surface,  The Tempest is a delightful romantic comedy. The characters of Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo provide comic scenes ranking with Shakespeare's best. The character of Prospero, a self-made sorcerer of considerable power, provides a solid core to the events. His tempest brings to him characters who cheated him in the past. However, this is not a revenge tragedy with comic overtones, but a celebration of the marriage of his daughter and the son of the king who helped his brother steal his dukedom. The major theme here is forgiveness. Prospero forgives all involved, including himself, and returns to reason his role as Duke of Milan and to celebrate the marriage of his daughter. Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo remain to rule the island as best they can.

We present here a celebration of joy, and I leave it to you to find the deeper meanings in the nooks and crannies of a truly brilliant script.

In addition to that he has played Stanley Gardner in the play Run for your Wife, which he first took on at Mira Costa College in '97 and then again here at Patio Playhouse in '04. John has remained active in theater both on stage and behind the scenes, having lent his skills as a make-up artist to both live performances and many film projects for SDSU. John would like to thank his mother for her support over the years and his children, who bring him constant joy and laughter. Love you guys!

He has appeared locally at such other venues as the Avo, Moonlight Amphitheater, North Coast Rep, Poway Performing Arts Company, Scripps Ranch Theatre and THEATRX. Jim is excited to be performing in his first Shakespeare play since college.

Jack Dunasky
- Boatswain

Jack is a retired lubrication engineer. Though he has been in many productions during the past sixteen years, he believes the only one of interest to anybody is this one, here and now. And Jack is a man of firm beliefs.

Austen Eames
- Ariel

Austen is a 10th grade homeschool student. She was Charlotte in Charlotte's Web with Patio Playhouse in fall of 2005 and recently appeared in Patio's Fool of the World. Other favorite roles include Gwendolyn in The Importance of Being Earnest, the Evil Stepmother in The Father's Gift, a Cinderella Story and The Widow in The Taming of the Shrew. At 16, Austen enjoys singing with the Small Opera of San Diego and the CFS Poway Youth Opera, playing the piano, reading, writing, skiing and spending time with her family, friends and three dogs. Austen is grateful to Dick Gant, Gretchen Pili and God for the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful production.

David Garstang - Adrian

Dave's parents met while performing in a Glendora Little Theater Guild play, so he owes his existence to community theater. This is his second play. Last year, he was thrilled to play Sid Sorokin in Patio's production of The Pajama Game. Although he's only been in two plays, his barbershop quartets have performed across the country, winning three International medals, and he regularly plays leading roles in his congregation's Purim musicals. He currently sings with "The Garstang Family Singers", a family variety act, and directs "The Mensch Tones", a Jewish barbershop group. Dave loves Shakespeare and is glad to have a part in The Tempest. He is grateful for the loving support of his family, which makes this all possible.

Rachel Garstang
- Nymph

Rachel is 11 years old and a 6th grader at Bernardo Heights Middle School. The Tempest is Rachel's third play at Patio. The first two (through Patio's Youtheatre program) were Charlotte's Web, in which she played Fern, and Why Do Heroes Have Big Feet. Rachel loves singing with her parents and older sister at nursing homes, and is always ready to sing or play an instrument in a talent show. Rachel has many interests, including reading, playing percussion instruments, writing, cooking and home arts. She hopes to be a doctor and a gourmet cook when she grows up.

He was last seen as Mr. Willard in Chicken Every Sunday.

Lindsey, a sophomore at San Pasqual High School, has been doing theater for five years. She played Maria in The Sound of Music, Ado Annie in Oklahoma and will be appearing as Marian in The Music Man. She also joined PowPAC in their production of The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds and played the deliciously off-beat character Janice Vickery. She is honored to be in a Patio Playhouse production with such knowledgeable and talented actors. She wants to thank Dick, Grethchen and fellow actors for putting up with her "first-time Shakespeare jitters"! "This is a production I'll never forget. Thanks so much to my mom for all the support and interest in what I love to do!"

Miranda Porter - Miranda

After a long break from the theatre, Miranda is very happy to be back and portraying her namesake. She was most recently seen in The Vagina Monologues with a cast of amazing women. Some of her favorite roles include Portia (Cinderella), Babe (The Pajama Game), Boo (Last Night of Ballyhoo), Giggles (24 hr Theatre) and Arkadina (The Seagull). She would like to thank her wonderful family and friends for putting up with her as she spent the last few weeks frantically learning Shakespeare. Stephen Rowe - Ferdinand

"I'm very excited to return to the Patio Playhouse stage! Previous favorite roles have been as Aaron Levinsky in Nuts, which received an Aubrey award nomination, and as part of the Aubrey winning cast in Cast Me, Tony!. I've waited a long time to perform in a Shakespeare production and am thrilled to work with such a talented cast and crew!"

JJ Rowley - Gonzalo

Born shoeless into a rather large family, JJ was forced into labor at an early age. Since acting was never really an option that would provide sustenance, he chose the route of entering the electronics field, which proved lucrative enough to support himself and canis familiaris companions for a period of years. Having abandoned that endeavor in search of a more satisfying career, he is now a credentialed elementary school teacher and looks forward to finding himself in his own 4th grade class next fall. None of this would have been possible without the un flagellating support of his wonderful wife, Sylvia. JJ was last seen at Patio as Finbar in Conor McPherson's The Wier one year ago.

Deborah Zimmer - Juno

Deborah, who has directed Measure for Measure and The Merchant of Venice for Patio Playhouse, is thrilled to finally be speaking Shakespeare's poetry 'trippingly off her goddess tongue'.
