FROM THE DIRECTOR

When I mentioned that the lumber I was buying at Home Depot was for the set of “Guys and Dolls”, the cashier looked at me and said, “That was the weirdest Marlon Brando movie ever”. After thinking about it, I decided that I agreed with her, but the story of “Guys and Dolls” began well before that well remembered movie. The show actually opened on Broadway on November 24, 1950, when I was a mature 9 days old, and since then has enjoyed some of the greatest success of any Broadway musical ever. Often revived on Broadway and more often performed by local theaters, the story is fun; the songs are among everyone’s favorites. I hope you enjoy our lovingly presented production, with what I think is an amazing display of talent by our all volunteer group of actors and musicians, and in the future, when you think of “Guys and Dolls” maybe you’ll remember Sara, Bob, Kris, Kevin and the rest, and not even think of Marlon Brando.

Bob Himlin – Sky Masterson
Bob is trying hard to contain his enthusiasm as he returns to Patio in one of his favorite roles. Bob received Patio’s Best Newcomer award for his performance as Starbuck in 110 in the Shade, and an Aubrey award for the Padre in Patio’s Man of La Mancha. Favorite roles elsewhere include The Music Man (Harold Hill), The Most Happy Fella, Side by Side by Sondheim, Greetings, and Legends! Bob would like to thank Sara for being tall as well as talented, and Richard, Mary and Brenda for that one extra minute.

  Sara Elliott – Sarah Brown
This is Sara’s first appearance with Patio, and she is excited to be playing the role of Sarah Brown once again. Sara’s experience spans 13 years, and includes recent appearances as Maria in West Side Story, Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, and Marion in The Music Man. She studied voice for more than 10 years under coaches including Dianna Ruggiero and Jim Cook. Thanks to Patio and all of its supports for this wonderful opportunity. She would also like to thank her family, Kristin, and Jeff for their support. Without them this experience would not have been possible.

Kevin Jones – Nathan Detroit
Kevin is the artistic manager of Patio, and has appeared frequently in a variety of mostly musical roles. His most recent stage appearance was in Little Mary Sunshine at Scripps Ranch Theater. As the designer of this show's program, he desperately needs a “Who’s Who” page with 5 actors on it, so he is keeping his bio short. Love to Michael, Alex and Addie.

Kristen Bauer – Miss Adelaide
This is a role that Kris has long coveted. Last summer, she was the remarkably hideous and equally obnoxious under-sexed wife, Domina in Forum. Favorite roles include Sheila and Judy A Chorus Line, Ethel in Footloose, Babe in Working, Sonya in Godspell, and a myriad of characters in Six Women With Brain Death. Thanks to Theresa and Bob for painting the set (I owe you big-time!), Nate for his never-ending supply of support, and gal pals; The Gen and the Mission Doll for making me laugh. A big hug to Krystal for stage managing. Love this cast!!!

Brian Weissman – Nicely Nicely Johnson
Brian is pleased to be back on stage at Kit Carson and working with the same great creative team again. Last summer, he was Hysterium in Forum. Before that, he made his California debut in The Pajama Game. He is thankful to be included in such a talented cast and to his wife and children for supporting his theater addiction.

Scott Kolod – Benny Southstreet
Scott always was a gambler and feels like he was born to play Benny Southstreet. He was most recently seen on the other side of the law, as Officer Krupke in AOB's production of West Side Story. Scott would like to thank Richard for casting him, Mary for fighting for him, Megan for rehearsing with him and Meredith for marrying him.

David Garstang - Rusty Charlie/Hot Box Emcee
Dave's parents met while in a play together, so he owes his very existence to community theater. He leads The Garstang Family Singers, a family variety act, and directs The MenschTones, a Jewish barbershop group. His barbershop quartets have performed in competitions across North America, winning three International medals. He played Sid Sorokin in Patio's The Pajama Game and sang in the musical revue Love Is In The Air. He recently played Friar Francis in his favorite comedy, Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.

Michael Clark – Big Jule
Patio Playhouse: The Merchant of Venice, Passing Time At The Pin Tan Tavern. Regional Theatre: Out of the Frying Pan, Maybe Tuesday, and Three Bags Full (Pasadena Playhouse). San Diego credits include: The Blue Room (Sixth@Penn / Producer), Scapino! (Scripps Ranch), California Suite (Coronado Playhouse), and Romeo and Juliet (Mercutio, The ARK Theatre). Michael studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Craig Fowler – Harry The Horse
Craig recently appeared as Captain Von Trapp in the Valley Center Community Theater’s The Sound of Music, and at Theatrx in the hilarious musical American Standard. At Patio he has appeared in Forum, The Pajama Game and Run For Your Wife. Other shows include La Pastorella De Esperanza at the Lyceum and The Living Last Supper at the Avo Playhouse. Craig would like to thank God, as well as the entire cast, musicians and crew, his family, friends, and Monkey, for being patient and understanding.

Kerry Stack – Lt. Brannigan
Kerry is excited to make his Patio Playhouse debut.  He has several credits with the Broadway Bound Youth Theatre located in Poway, his daughter's acting troupe, including Annie, Oliver and Bye Bye Birdie.  Kerry would like to thank his family, friends, Richard Brousil and Mary Bright, and his fellow cast members for being so gracious and nice, making this a truly wonderful and memorable experience for him.

Kelli Harless - General Cartwright
I have been actively involved in Patio Playhouse for the past 5 years both acting and directing. The most recent acting being Book of Days and Much Ado About Nothing with Patio and The Magic Fire at Palomar College. I'm excited to be working with such a talented cast and crew here at the park. Next up is Smell of the Kill coming Sept. 16th to Theatrx. Hope to see you there!!!! oh, this 'Doll' would like to especially thank her 'Guys' at home for pulling together so she can play.

  Tom Pierpoint – Arvide Abernathy
This is Tom's second appearance with Patio’s Plays In The Park, appearing last year as Miles Gloriosus in Forum. Tom grew up in French-speaking Switzerland and has been active in local community theater since moving to So CA from Sweden (ja, for sure) in 1988. Anyone who knows Tom can appreciate the irony in he being cast as a Salvation Army character. Tom also has a passion for collecting classic Clenet automobiles (www.Clenet.org).

Gretchen Pili - Agatha
Active at Patio Playhouse since 1980, and beginning to show it, Gretchen has enjoyed a number of wonderful roles, including Louisa in Ladies in Retirement, Agnes Gooch in Auntie Mame, Penny in You Can’t Take It With You, Madame Armfelt in A Little Night Music, and Mrs. Antrobus in The Skin of Our Teeth. She was last seen as Mabel in The Pajama Game.

Lori Tinkle – Mimi The Hot Box Girl/Havana Dancer
This is Lori's fourth production with Patio Playhouse. She played the role of Babe in The Pajama Game for which she received an Aubrey nomination. Other roles: Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls, Ann Peri in Cast Me Tony. Lori is currently enjoying the role of mother to her one-year old son, Ryan Paul, and extends a salute and a kiss to her amazing husband Virgil. Lori, Virgil and Ryan will be moving to Norfolk, VA when the show closes. Lori thanks everyone at Patio for the memories, laughs and friendships she has enjoyed in the past 3 years.

Ashley Luckow – Choreographer/Hot Box Girl/Havana Dancer
With an extensive background in musical theatre, Ashley’s main area of interest branched off toward the study ballet long ago. She's an instructor at local dance schools and a performer, most recently dancing the title role in New West Ballet’s production of Cinderella. Ashley will graduate next year from Cal State San Marcos with a B.A. degree in Liberal Studies and a minor degree in Dance. Ashley greatly appreciates the opportunity to choreograph with Patio layhouse and enjoys being onstage with her husband, Andrew, as well.

  Lindsey O’Connor – Hot Box Girl/Havana Dancer
Lindsey has been doing theater for five years. She played Maria in The Sound of Music, Ado Annie in Oklahoma and will be appearing as Marian in The Music Man. She also joined PowPAC in their production of The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds and played the deliciously off-beat character Janice Vickery. She is honored to be in a Patio Playhouse production with such knowledgeable and talented actors.

Kaitlyn Ralston – Hot Box Girl/Havana Dancer
Kaity is a theatre major at Palomar College. Her love for performing started at three, running around in a tutu (terrorizing her parents), and asking, "Can I have ballet lessons?" She has enjoyed appearing in many High School and community theatre productions such as A Midsummer Night's Dream (Puck), Grease (Frenchie), Annie (Lily St. Regis), and The Wizard of Oz (Glinda). She"s very excited for her debut in a full adult theatre group and is so glad to share it with her other family that is Patio Playhouse. To her real family she would like to say, "Thanks for not killing me off at an early age, love you!" And to her friends (especially Laurel, Laura, and Caleb) "Love you guys! Thanks for being such a blessing to me! YIMP"

Julia Bonnici – Hot Box Girl/Havana Dancer
Julia has been performing since age 10 when she appeared in Annie. She had done a lot of theatre in North County with Premiere Players and Patio Playhouse through her high school years. She took a break for college, but returned to the stage in Patio's Gypsy. Her last Patio show was The Pajama Game. She thanks her husband, Josh, for all of his love and support.

Emily Amezcua - Hot Box Girl/Havana Dancer
Emily has been acting in San Diego for several years in productions such as A Chorus Line, West Side Story, and most recently The Women at the Avo Playhouse and Much Ado About Nothing. She's active in film and television appearing in local commercials and indie shorts. She studies acting for television and film at Carey Scott's Rehearsal Room in San Diego and is also a member of the Actor's Alliance. Emily feels privileged to be participating in Patio’s Guys and Dolls. Thanks to a great cast, directors and musicians.

Marlene Garstang – Mission Band/Havana Dancer
Although this is Marlene’s Patio stage debut, she has been highly involved at Patio in other ways. She was co-director of the first PPH Academy for kids this summer, and is assistant director for the Youth Theater production, Tricksters and Treats. She played Janet in the Scripps Ranch Theater production of 6 Rms Riv Vu, and in productions for her congregation at Temple Adat Shalom. Marlene wants to thank her family--David, Jenny, and Rachel--for being so willing to eat fast food on rehearsal nights!

Cathy Abler – Mission Band/Havana Dancer
After many years singing as a soprano soloist in her church choir, this is Cathy's first role in a full-length musical production. Cathy has studied various styles of music including Opera, Sacred, and Musical Theater intermittently since 1983. As a lead soprano, some of the productions Cathy has performed in include G. F. Handel’s The Messiah, John Rutter’s Magnificat, Josef Rheinberger’s Missa in Nativitate Domini, as well as several Bach Cantatas. Cathy would like to thank her family for their patience and for Richard and Mary for casting her!

J Darling – Mission Band/Havana Dancer
J is very excited to be making her Patio debut. She recently appeared as "Moena" in American Standard at Theatrx and has also performed in Caucasian Chalk Circle, and Book of Days at Palomar College. Her first solo album, entitled Fly, is due out this fall. "This has been a very exciting year for me. I hope to continue my work with Patio Playhouse in the future." She'd like to give a special thanks to her family and friends for their love, support, and occasional kicks in the pants.

Terry Parish – Mission Band/Havana Dancer
After taking many years off to raise a family and start a business, she is delighted to be involved with theatre once more! She spent two seasons with Lyric Opera San Diego and is enjoying her participation with Patio Playhouse. Many thanks to clients and friends who see so little of her lately!

Sherry Black – Mission Band
Married to Donny B for 35 years, Sherry also considers grand-parenting her favorite role. Although this is her first time in a stage play, she has been on many stages as a choral singer. In 2001, Sherry performed with a representative group from the North County Community Chorus in four choral concerts in China. Sherry thanks her awesome and talented friend, Lori Tinkle, for introducing her to Patio Playhouse. And she thanks the directors for giving her the opportunity to mark one more thing off of her life's 'To Do' list.

Kelly Dreyer - Mission Band/Havana Dancer
Kelly is currently a sophomore at the USD, and proud member of Alpha Delta Pi. Her goal is to become an entertainment lawyer. She has performed in many shows with San .Diego Junior Theatre, one of her favorites being Footloose, as well as dancing for two years with the San Diego Civic Dance Company. She is happy to be in her first show here at Patio

Andrew Luckow – Gambler/Havana Dancer
This is Andrew’s first production with Patio Playhouse and has had a great time acting onstage as a gambler, Havana dancer, and a waiter. He hopes to make time for more shows in the future, aside from working full-time and going to school to become a civil engineer.

Jonathan Rossall – Gambler/Havana Dancer
Five years ago I landed the roll of Moonface Martin in the musical Anything Goes. I haven't been allowed anywhere near a stage since then.

Donny Black - Gambler
Donny made his stage debut at the Horton Grand Theater playing Mr. Shorofsky in a 1995 production of Fame. He followed that with The Wiz in 1996, also at the Horton Grand. Many locals have enjoyed his talent for vocal impersonation, especially in re-creating the voice of his idol, Louis Armstrong. His favorite role these days is as 'Pops' to his 10 year old granddaughter. He is new to Patio Playhouse, and appreciates the opportunity to become a part of a new theater 'family.'

Jim Clevenger - Gambler
Jim has been performing at Patio for more than 20 years. This season he was seen as Burt in Proposals, Prospero in Shakepeare’s The Tempest and as Otto Frank in The Diary Of Anne Frank. He has also appeared locally at Avo, Moonlight Amphitheatre, North Coast Rep, POWPAC, Scripps Ranch Theatre, and THEATRX. In his limited time away from the theatre, Jim teaches at National University and occasionally practices trademark law.
